Event venue Dorhout Mees chose to use part of its golf courses to install solar panels. Therefore, Novar has realized solar farm Dorhout Mees in 2022. The park has been supplying power to the grid since August 2022.
Changing conditions within the golf market led the management of Dorhout Mees golf course to consider a different use for this land. In 2018, the Municipality of Dronten made it known that they are positive about the development of a solar park.
The municipality of Dronten falls within the Regional Energy Strategy (RES) region of Flevoland. Flevoland aims to achieve at least 16.5% of national renewable energy generation by 2030. The solar park is currently the largest solar park in the Netherlands and contributes to the objectives set within the municipality of Dronten.

Location of solar farm
This solar farm is located south of the village of Biddinghuizen. The project area is part of the recreational area Dorhout Mees. On the north side the solar farm borders the open agricultural area, the west and east sides are bordered by a forest complex. South of the farm is the Strandgaperweg, the Harderdijk, a golf course and a nature reserve.
How can residents participate?
ZonnepanelenDelen has joined this project to enable participation for local residents. They invest in a solar bond and receive a return on it. Consumers can thus benefit from solar energy even without a suitable roof.
Largest solar park in the Netherlands
From July 21, 2022, Zonnepark Dorhout Mees will have its first electricity supplied to the grid. The solar park of over 300,000 solar panels is about 85 hectares in size, making it the largest solar park in the Netherlands. In total, the park generates about 144 MWp. This provides power to over 44,000 households per year. This means enough green power for the entire municipality of Dronten and then there is even power left over. An innovative solution has been devised to get around the problems of limited capacity at the grid stations. A Closed Distribution System (GDS) set up in cooperation with EQUANS was used for the grid connection of the park.
"With the cooperation between EQUANS and Novar, we are joining hands to accelerate the energy transition."Peter Schillemans, Manager of Renewable Energy & Grids at EQUANS
