Betuwe Solar Park - Hardinxveld-Giessendam

Space for nature at this solar farm next to railroad tracks

ProjectsSolar farm Betuwelijn - Hardinxveld-Giessendam

Novar is currently developing solar farm Betuwelijn together with energy cooperative Drechtse Energie and the landowner. The solar farm will be located right next to the railroad line and has an area of more than 12 hectares.

About solar farm Betuwelijn

Novar is currently developing a solar farm next to part of the Betuwe railroad line, together with energy cooperative Drechtse Energie. It involves a total solar farm of 12.7 hectares, with plenty of room for ecological incorporation. By means of 23,336 panels, we are generating enough sustainable energy to provide approximately 4,400 households with green power.

More information about the project can be found on the project page of the platform Drechtsteden denk mee! Solar park Betuwelijn (drechtstedenenergie.nl).

Landscaping of the solar farm

In designing this solar farm, Novar is taking into account as much multifunctional use of space as possible and preserving the character of the landscape and local ecological environment. For example, the landowner's sheep can graze under the panels and we are taking measures to increase biodiversity on the plan area. For example, the plan area will be made more attractive to insects, among other things, by adding area-specific shrubs, flower and herb-rich grassland, butterfly dams, pools and natural reed beds. Also, the eastern tip of the plan area is too narrow for solar panels, so we can apply additional ecological measures here.

Battery

Novar is exploring the possibility of installing a battery at this solar farm to relieve the local power grid when needed.

Contribution

By creating a solar farm close to infrastructure, we are making optimal use of this piece of land. By paying attention to biodiversity in the farm, we not only help the energy transition, but also the environment. We are also aiming for 50% local ownership of the farm, so that residents will actually benefit from the energy generated.
