When is a roof suitable as a solar roof?

To determine whether a company roof is suitable as a solar roof, we conduct a feasibility study. Not every roof is immediately suitable, but often company roofs can be made suitable for the large-scale installation of solar panels. In doing so, we take into account:

  • Obstacles on the roof
  • Shade from surrounding trees and buildings 
  • The current roof structure 
  • Type of roofing
  • Net roof area
  • Connectivity to the existing energy grid.

Together with the roof owner, our specialists explore options such as a new roof construction, the ideal arrangement of solar panels and the best mounting system. For example, there are possibilities for solar panels on roofs with a lightweight construction. We also make arrangements with the grid operator. Here, capacity is the biggest issue.

Large-scale installation of solar panels on a company roof

We must make meters to succeed in the transition from fossil energy to renewable energy. An efficient way to do this is by installing large-scale solar panels on company roofs. In this way we can generate solar energy on a large scale.

Increasingly, large solar parks are being built on (agricultural) land. But not everyone has access to at least 50,000 m2 of land. At Novar we can build on roofs smaller: from 3,000 m2. Roofs of sheds, warehouses, or parking garages, for example, also provide a double function for the existing environment. The generated energy can then be used for different purposes and target groups. An example: a solar roof of 10,000 m2 on an industrial site can supply a residential area with about 400 homes with green electricity for a year! 

Solar roof for farmers

In addition to commercial roofs on industrial sites, large roofs are commonly found in the agricultural sector. Think of large stables, barns and greenhouses. These areas are also extremely suitable for generating sustainable solar energy. This makes a solar roof ideal for farmers. Thus, a farmer becomes not only an important supplier of our food, but also of our solar energy! A farm with 3,500 m2 of roof area can supply about 140 households with electricity for a year.

The Netherlands has many agricultural roofs on which solar panels have already been installed. A picture that is also becoming increasingly accepted in our Dutch landscape. But, that is now only a small percentage of all agricultural roofs. Therein lies an opportunity. Many roofs of barns contain asbestos. This asbestos must be removed before 2024. Replacing the roof can be nicely paired, or possibly financed, with the income from a solar roof. In addition, taking demonstrable sustainable measures can provide benefits. An interesting form of dual use.

Meanwhile, we are busy realizing about 50 megawatts (MW) of large-scale solar roofs. Of that, the first 2.5 MW has already been developed and connected. We have divided that across four different rooftop projects. The combined roof area is over 15,000 m2. This means some 780 households will be supplied with renewable energy. 

To give substance to the energy transition, we will have to generate sustainable energy in various ways. For solar, this means realizing solutions both on land and in the built environment. In addition to land and carports, roofs are an important location for our projects. We have the ambition, within now and 10 years, to provide 1 million households with sustainable energy.

You can also buy solar panels on a business basis or lease solar panels on a business basis. We provide support wherever you need us. Whatever choice you make: we will always be there beside you. Would you like to rent your roof for solar panels to Novar? Then you won't have to invest yourself and we will relieve you of all your worries. In short: we take care of everything. You will also receive your rental income immediately from the first month. If you start your own solar roof project of at least 3,000 m2 then Novar will support you where necessary. The stages in developing a solar roof

Interested in a solar roof? We'd be happy to show you the steps that lead to your first solar yield when you rent your roof to Novar.

  • Applications: You take the first step. With the completed quick scan, we estimate the solar yield of your roof  
  • Develop: We examine how your solar roof can fit into the power grid, how good the current roof construction is, and we set the initial (contract) agreements. 
  • Financing: As a roof owner, you don't have to invest in your solar roof yourself. We arrange the full financing and apply for the SDE subsidy.
  • Construction: During construction, we ensure that you and your employees can always continue working 'down below'. So you have no loss of production. In short: you operate under the roof, we are on top.  
  • Manage: We stay connected for at least 16 years and keep your solar roof in top condition for all that time (as we benefit from that ourselves). From a distance, we monitor the performance of the solar roof 24/7 and intervene immediately if necessary.

Connecting a solar roof to the energy grid

A solar roof can be connected to the power grid only when there is sufficient transmission capacity available on the local power grid. This is because a solar roof produces an enormous amount of power. Tip: If the SDE subsidy was recently awarded, there will be sufficient transmission capacity available in your area. 

How the solar roof will be technically connected to the energy grid depends on the throughput of your main connection. If the capacity allows it, we will try to use the existing connection as much as possible. However, if the connection does not have sufficient capacity, we will consult with you about installing an external transformer or making the existing connection heavier.

This consideration includes whether you supply (part of) the generated electricity to your own company or whether everything is delivered back to the energy grid. A full feed-in connection has the advantage that an additional metering point can be realized, making it possible to contract multiple energy suppliers on one connection.

What happens to the electricity generated?

Business solar panels produce direct current via sunlight on the business roof. Inverters then convert this into alternating current. You use this alternating current directly on site or supply it back to the energy grid. Read more about what happens to the electricity generated.

SDE Subsidy for solar roofs

It is possible to apply for an SDE subsidy for solar roofs. The SDE++ (Stimuleringsregeling Duurzame Energietransitie) is an operating subsidy. It compensates for the unprofitable difference between the market price of the energy supplied and the cost price of the renewable energy generated. Currently, the cost of generating renewable energy is still higher than that of energy from fossil fuels. However, the cost of solar panels is falling rapidly and it is expected that within a few years no more subsidies will be needed to make a solar roof financially profitable.

Subsidy scheme changed in 2020

Whereas previously it was possible to apply for the SDE subsidy twice a year, it is now only possible once. Also, the number of different technologies that can claim the subsidy scheme is expanded and these technologies are ranked by € subsidy per ton of CO2 avoided. In addition to solar panels, wind energy, for example, is also entitled to this subsidy.

The basis for this scheme has remained the same: the grant amount determines the order in which applications are processed. It is therefore important to apply for the grant for the most appropriate base amount. If too much subsidy is applied for, the subsidy pot may be empty before your project is eligible.

Whether you invest in a solar roof yourself, rent your roof to Novar or choose an intermediate solution, the roof will always provide a positive financial return. Besides being good for your wallet, it's especially very good for our world. You are contributing to the sustainable generation of energy. Solar roofs play a key role in the energy transition, we are convinced of that! 

What type of solar panels is suitable for a solar roof?

In principle, any solar panel is suitable for a solar roof, but not every solar panel is the same. There are mainly three types of solar panels that can be distinguished: 

  • Monocrystalline solar panels
    The structure of the silicon in these solar cells consists of one large crystal. Hence the name. Monocrystalline material was originally used in the production of electronics chips Because monocrystalline solar panels are produced in this way, they have the highest efficiency of the three types of solar panels, but are the most expensive.
  • Polycrystalline solar panels
    To produce polycrystalline solar panels, silicon in liquid form is used. This liquid substance is poured into large blocks. As these blocks harden, crystals form that take on different shapes, making them less "smooth. The difference in efficiency between polycrystalline and monocrystalline solar panels runs to several percent.
  • Amorphous solar panels
    An amorphous solar panel uses a photovoltaic layer applied to a glass or other material. This type of solar panel is the cheapest available on the market due to its low production cost. On the other hand, it also has the lowest efficiency. 

For Novar, efficiency versus yield is always an important consideration in a solar roof project. Therefore, an amorphous type will not be chosen easily. On the other hand, a monocrystalline may be too expensive compared to the slightly higher yield of the solar panel. Each project is different!

What subsidies are available for solar panels on company roofs?

In addition to the well-known SDE++ subsidy, several regions in the Netherlands offer subsidies for removing asbestos, strengthening the roof structure or purchasing lightweight panels. This varies by region. With this, the government supports companies in making their premises more sustainable. This is important in order to jointly achieve the Dutch climate objectives. Novar has extensive experience in applying for such subsidies. This knowledge helps roof owners achieve optimum returns on making their premises more sustainable! 

Subsidy solar panels region of South Holland

The Province of South Holland makes it possible for large roof owners to apply for various subsidies. The property owner must have at least 15 kWp (about 45-50 panels) of solar panels installed on the roof. 

Weak roof

For property owners with roofs with too little bearing capacity for conventional solar panels, a subsidy is exempted. With this subsidy, you can have the roof braced or opt for the lightweight solar panels.


There are also still many roofs with asbestos. The province has exempted a subsidy for asbestos removal for this too. For strengthening the roof, purchasing lightweight solar panels and/or asbestos removal, an applicant can receive €80 per kWp of solar panels (about 3 pv panels) realized.
